Best Paint Finishes and Wall Surfaces for Wall Stickers

So your plan for redecorating includes wall stickers? That's great!

We're here to help you make that plan successful with some technical tips about the best paint finishes and wall surfaces for use with our vinyl wall stickers.

1 - PAINT FINISHES - Satin or glossy paint provides a good finish for applying wall stickers. Enamel is even better because it is the least porous. Flat finish is too porous to allow wall stickers to adhere well and zero VOC paint doesn't work well either. 2 - TEXTURE VS SHINE - In our experience, a shiny paint (satin, gloss, enamel) is better, even on a wall with some texture, than a dull (flat) paint on a wall that is smooth/without texture. Our special post about working with texture can be found Tips for Applying Wall Stickers to Textured Walls.

3 - DRYING VS CURING - Your paint may be dry to the touch but that doesn't mean it has cured (hardened all the way through). This is a crucial difference. Curing can take several days or longer, depending on your paint and on the dampness or coolness of the weather, but usually plan on at least 2 weeks. Check your paint can label for specific curing times or contact us at Wall Decor Plus More and we'll try to help you. The stronger the odor your new paint gives off, the longer you should let it cure before applying wall stickers. The smell likely comes from the compounds and gases in the paint which can break down the adhesive on the wall stickers, making them not stick or fall off a short time after application.

4 - MOISTURE & WALL STICKERS - Hold on, this doesn't mean wall stickers won't work in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. They will! It's ongoing moisture behind your sheetrock that can cause problems for your wall stickers. We're talking about walls that back up to cooling systems, water pipes, overhead windows or windows that have been boarded up–areas that are prone to condensation, which may not be obvious when you apply your wall stickers. 4 Things To Know About Wall Stickers

All of us want to be smart shoppers and get the best value for our dollar. We thought it might be helpful to clear up some of the confusion about types of wall decals stickers and how to choose a quality product.

At times, customers contact us with questions or problems about their wall decals stickers, especially those bought from competitors. After visiting with these customers, we knew the product they were dealing with was not ours, but we still wanted to help. Some of these problems included:

• struggling to remove a sticker that was pulling off the paint (see #2 and #3 below);
• not knowing how to apply a sticker printed on sticky plastic instead of being die-cut (see #4)

Here are 4 important things to know about wall stickers so you can make a smart choice:

1. Always read application instructions before you purchase. These will inform you about how well the product is made. If the manufacturer is sending you a film to apply to the sticker yourself, that's a real red flag–a reputable wall sticker manufacturer has already applied this transfer film to the wall sticker. If you have to do this yourself and don't have a lot of experience, you may get wrinkles, crooked lettering, etc., making a quality wall sticker application nearly impossible. We often see this type of problem on wall stickers from China and Hong Kong.

2. Check to be sure that the material is designed for Home Décor use. Vinyl stickers for signage existed a long time before Home Décor wall stickers became popular. Stickers for signs need super strong adhesive to withstand outdoor elements–PLUS they need to be glossy to attract attention. Neither Glossy nor Strong Adhesive types are advised for Home Décor use.

3. Select a Matte finish for the best Home Décor application. The non-shiny look of a Matte finish wall decals stickers allows it to look like a custom paint application once put on to your wall. All high-quality wall stickers have this Matte finish.

4. Make sure the item is a Die-cut Decal; you don't want just an image printed on sticky plastic. This is a deal-breaker! A die-cut decal has no background permanently attached to it or surrounding it (ie. no sticky clear plastic), just the vinyl die-cut lettering/design that will go on the wall. Some cheap wall decals stickers are not actually decals – they are just a design printed on thin plastic material with a sticky coating, which does not adhere well to anything except smooth surfaces. Plus, the clear plastic looks tacky on your wall.

Can I Use Vinyl Wall Stickers in My Bathroom?

YES–yes you can!

It's a logical question and one we get asked quite often because bathrooms are usually high in moisture. Below we share a couple of things to remember so your Wall Stickers will "stay stuck" and liven up that dull and dreary bathroom.

The key to achieving trouble-free Wall Stickers in any bathroom is to make sure the wall surface is CLEAN and DRY at the time of application, when the bonding occurs. Once you have good adherence, you are home free. Let your creativity fly–apply Wall Stickers around/above your shower/tub area, as shown in the photo, or anywhere else in the bathroom. The Funky Circle Wall Stickers shown above have been there for almost a year with no peeling or looseness.

Removing and Replacing Vinyl Wall Stickers

Found a new wall sticker you love? Need to replace an old one? Let us show you how easy it is to remove vinyl wall stickers in your home decor. And good news–they're as easy to remove as they are to apply!

The photos below show that no paint is coming off the wall or even stuck to the back of the wall sticker itself during removal. It usually is just this clean and easy. However, do be aware that there are a couple of factors that can affect the ease of removal of a vinyl wall sticker or decal.

Consider that wall paint not only needs to dry, it needs time to "cure." What does this mean? Well, paint goes through a two-stage process: in the first stage, the paint "dries" when the solvents and thinners evaporate from the paint on the wall; in the second stage, the paint "cures" when it hardens into a solid film. This can take up to two weeks, or longer if it's very humid in the room, or during wet or humid weather. If a vinyl wall sticker is applied before the paint has fully cured, there may be some paint loss when you eventually remove that decal.

Wall Decals used for Home Decor NEED to be made using vinyl material that has a special adhesive.  If you do not have this special "vinyl for Home Decor", you WILL NOT have an easy decal removal, like shown here!  Thankfully, Vinyl Wall Stickers from Wall Decor Plus More are made with this special "vinyl for Home Decor"!

Lots of customers use a hair blow dryer to remove wall stickers. The heat softens the wall sticker's adhesive, making it easier to peel off. CAUTION: heat from the hair blow dryer can be HOT on your fingers too, so be careful with this, especially if children are helping you.

As you can see in the photo below, the new border we applied in our entryway is being removed, with the help of eager little hands. Be sure to read the caution below the photo, to control which wall decals you want removed–and when!

How to Brighten Up & Organize Your Laundry Room

Has your Laundry Room become a catch-all? A dingy place you try to avoid? Let's change that. After all, the Laundry Room is where a lot of the "clean routine" happens in your home–it needs to be both attractive and functional, a pleasant place to complete those tasks that keep your family humming along on a clean track. It's quite suitable as a Do it yourself project too.

First, figure out how you want the room to function: is it also a mudroom? a second bathroom? a sewing space? Decide how you want it to look and where you want things to go. 

The next step is cleaning. Remove everything that will no longer hide out in there. Sweep and mop the floor, wipe down shelves, scrub cabinets and appliances in and out, and clean your sink. (Don't forget to check lint traps, they can be a fire hazard.) Wash any windows and curtains. Now the fun begins!

Use a fun patterned fabric to cover unsightly things like pipes under the sink. You'll also need a place to fold clothes: counter top (a drop-down one if space is tight) or a rolling cart with a counter too. You'll need a sorting cart to separate colors and whites. Hooks or hanging bars and hangers can be used for drip-dry items and will save on ironing if you hang things up right out of the dryer.
